The 3rd Kaliningrad International Film Festival «On The Edge. West» wrapped up on May 7, 2022 in the Zarya Theater.

In closing remarks, the festival’s producer Alexey Agranovich said that this year, the event had 37 screenings attended by 5,500 people, and 70 people took part in five workshops.
As always, the KIFF "One The Edge. West" had two panels of jurors — one comprised of teenagers, and the other, of teachers from Kaliningrad and the Kaliningrad region.
In compliance with the Festival’s regulations, each panel has two nominations — one pre-named, the other with an open title. The Best Film Award has to be awarded by a joint decision of both panels.
The Teenage Jury, comprised of local school children and students aged 15−17, awarded the prize in the pre-named nomination, called "A Story About Me", to Playground, a Belgian film directed by Laura Wandel. The open-titled award went to Waters of Pastaza, a Portuguese film by Inês T. Alves, the nomination itself described as "Best Experimental Film".
The Teachers' Jury of five local teachers and regional school directors named the lead character of Iranian film The Blue Girl by Keivan Majidi as the winner in the "Hero" nomination. The other prize, to "Best Director", was bestowed on Playground.
The decision on the Best Film did not come easy. Both juries seemed disinclined to budge, but after a nearly three-hour discussion, they managed to reach a compromise. The main prize of the KIFF "On The Edge. West" was awarded to Aya, a French-Belgian production directed by Simon Gillard.
Actor and director Filipp Avdeyev who curated the Teenage Jury addressed his panel: "I'm having an outburst here: I’m so happy to have met you. Surely you have to develop and move forward, but I ask you to keep this courage, freedom, authenticity, and keep your inner child with you until the end. I’m grateful to you for these seven days, you are wonderful, smart and very talented"
To support the statement about the heated discussion, Alexey Agranovich jokingly said that Stas Ivanov, the curator of the Teachers' Jury, narrowly escaped being booked for violating rules. Stas publicly confirmed the debate wasn’t easy, and said: "This was a superb experience. I got hooked on my Teachers Jury but I was very keen to communicate with the teenagers"
In addition to the awards given to the films of the main program, members of the audience could vote for any film regardless of the program. The Audience Choice Award was given to Assa, a film screened in the retrospective program "Portrait of the Generation, or When Parents Were Like Me. A Few Films By Sergey Solovyov." Lead female character Tatiana Drubich presented the film in person. The retrospective program was organised in partnership with the Tretyakov Gallery. The festival’s schedule also featured a concert by pianist Alexey Goribol in the Kaliningrad Cathedral where he performed music by Isaac Schwartz from Sergey Solovyov’s films.
When receiving the Audience Choice Award, the most important prize of the festival, Tatiana Drubich addressed the core audience of the festival, the teenagers: "I watched Assa for the second time in my life at this festival. And I got younger together with you. I wanted to thank you and to wish you that you stay yourselves. You have an inner compass, it will never betray you, just follow it."

During the last week of the festival, the Kaliningrad Zoo became home to a creative lab proposed by the Kaliningrad branch of the Tretyakov Gallery and organised by the Cartonia Project under the slogan, "What unites the world?". The result of their work was exhibited at a show and during a performance at the Zarya Theater. All participants of the event were featured in a short documentary/exhibition which premiered on the last day of the festival.
Same as in the previous years, the festival hosted creative workshops and labs for local children and teenagers, a practice that was set up at the festival's inception and became its integral and most important part. In these workshops, children and teenagers study the basics of filmmaking, animation and documentary all year round. Five workshops started operating in autumn 2021.

On May 6, the festival hosted a presentation of final works by workshops. It was opened with the exhibition Between Us and Birds by the Animation Workshop for Teenagers. The event showcased the work on the animation film Birds, or New Information about Man, based on a story by Andrey Bitov, on which participants with their curators worked during the year. The exhibition followed the stages of work on the film, allowing visitors to find out more about this creative and educational experiment, and about the experience of the members of the workshop. After the opening, the final products of the workshops were presented on Zarya Theater's big screen.
The Animation Workshop for Children presented three animated shorts, and is gearing to embark on a new big project. The Animation Workshop for Teenagers held five filming sessions over the year. Participants, assisted by their curators, produced an animation film based on Birds, or New Information about Man where everyone contributed to the script and the storyboard, and learnt graphics software. The Film Lab presented the film Eleven, a story about 11 teenagers discussing immoral behaviour of a teacher and deciding whether or not they should sign a letter against her. The Documentary Lab presented a series of five stories about teenage girls in the I-Movie technique.
Participants of the Producer Workshop, together with their curators, put together a film program of their own which was presented at the festival. At the closing ceremony, they announced a new international film festival — the Kaliningrad Open Festival of the Future "Light Play" - which will be fully organised by teenagers and will screen films made by children from all over the world. The Festival has been scheduled for May 2023.

The Kaliningrad International Film Festival "On the Edge. West" was made possible with the support of the Government of the Kaliningrad Region and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
